You will have noticed that for some of our jewelry we use the term VERMEIL or specifically 24K VERMEIL.
WHAT IS VERMEIL JEWELRY?
The most straightforward answer will be that
VERMEIL JEWELRY IS GOLD PLATED OVER SILVER!
Our vermeil jewelry is sterling silver (925) plated with 24K gold which is a good combination for those with allergy to normal, plated jewelry items. If you are allergic to gold plated jewelry where the base metal is usually brass or copper then our gold vermeil jewelry is for you!
What is GOLD PLATING?
Gold plating is a method of depositing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal, most often copper or silver (to make silver-gilt), by chemical or electrochemical plating.
Gold plated jewelry where the base metal is NOT SILVER but usually brass or copper is NOT VERMEIL JEWELRY
For example: the LARGE CONE EARRINGS (cat no: 947) below are available in Sterling Silver or 24K Vermeil option. If you choose the Vermeil Earrings option they will be the same Sterling Silver Earrings but electroplated with 24K gold. So what makes them VERMEIL is the base metal which is 925 Sterling Silver. All our jewelry is Sterling Silver and all our gold plated jewelry is VERMEIL jewelry.
GOLD PLATED vs GOLD FILLED JEWELRY
GOLD FILLED and GOLD PLATED sound similar and I have noticed it’s sometimes even used interchangeably while actually it means two different things. While Gold plated is a very thin film of pure gold applied by electroplating , Gold filled is actually a thin LAYER of gold bonded to the base metal and literally has 100% more gold than gold plating. Gold filled is much more valuable and tarnish resistant. It does not flake off, rub off or turn colors.
